So you booked a photoshoot?
I would like to start this by saying each person I photograph is different, of course your outfit choices should reflect you and your style. Not everyone feels confident in the same colors, not everyone has the same body type, you do not have to wear something just because it is trendy or someone told you to. I can give you advice on what I believe photographs well, but you feeling beautiful, happy, and in love with yourself will make your images more beautiful, no matter what you are wearing.
You are a beautiful soul, let's capture you and your true essence.
What to wear:
I. Think about the colors you wear the most.
I am a huge fan of earth tones and neutrals, but I know not everyone loves to wear those colors and THAT IS OKAY. Think about what colors you enjoy to wear, for example my favorite color to wear is black or dark green.
II. Comfortable and Confident.
I always recommend wearing something you are comfortable and confident in. When you feel good and are comfortable with what you are wearing, your photos will turn out more genuine. My sessions involve moving around, so make sure you are comfortable walking, dancing, sitting, etc!
III. Coordinating Over Matching.
For my couple and family sessions, coordinating over matching is always the way to go. For family, choose a color scheme. Earth tones + one color or shades of a color can look so great! I will show you some examples.
Here are some photos for my visual learners like myself. You can see how well neutrals photograph and see how the colors you wear have a big impact on how the overall photo turns out. I want the focus to be on you!! I have also linked a Pinterest board with inspo below!
A few tips to keep in mind + avoid.
01.
BRIGHT COLORS
If you are not looking for a colorful shoot, please avoid bright colors. Neons, yellows, reds, pinks, etc. they all affect editing and shift the focus to the outfits rather than you. These colors vibrate, can look over-saturated, and create unflattering casts on the skin. If we are doing a shoot with the intention of having bright colors, then yes wear them!
02.
PATTERNS/LOGOS
There are some patterns that look great and tie outfits together for group photos. For individual portraits, I would try to avoid pattens and go for more solid colors. Watch out for tiny patterns, they get distorted. You can look up "moire" to see examples of that. Busy patterns and logos can also be distracting. Try to look for clothing that have either no logos or very small. Again, we want the focus to be on you!
Earth Tones
Think about the color of everything in nature that we can see on the earth, the trees, grass, oceans, beaches, mountains, flowers, etc. See how everything just goes together, how every landscape is the perfect shade that complements one another.
A few more tips...
- Think about the vibe you are going for and the location and dress for that. Playing around at the lake or running through a field, you may want to do a more casual outfit. Celebrating graduation on campus or an engagement at the capital, maybe classy outfits. It just depends on the vibe you are going for + throwing in your own style so they are true to you!
- SHOES: if we are going to be doing a ton of walking, make sure to wear comfortable shoes or bring some with to change into so your feet won't ache.
- WEAR WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD!!
- Try on your outfits beforehand. This is so important!! Make sure that you like the way you look in your clothing and are comfortable. Couple and family sessions: have everyone try on their outfits together and make sure you like how they look together!
- Feel free to text me images of the outfits you plan on wearing if you have questions. I am always ready to help!
- If you plan on using your photos in your home, think about the colors in your house as well and what would complement your decor you already have.
Most importantly, I want you to be comfortable, happy, and confident.
Outfits are important, yes, but do not get so caught up in finding the "perfect" outfits. At the end of the day, you will remember the laughs you shared with your family, the cuddles you shared with your lover, or the jokes we shared during your session. The memories you make during your session will only grow in value as time passes after your session. You will have these photos to look back on for years to come. Don't stress and let me know if you need any help.
